Tips for keeping your velvet talismans looking their best
I love how velvet catches the light, its tone shifting subtly with the direction of the pile. I love how soft and gentle it feels to the touch, and the luxurious sensation it evokes… Like a crystal or a gem, cotton velvet is precious, it speaks "quiet sophistication".
For centuries, velvet has been associated with nobility and refinement. But cotton velvet, in particular, stands out for its natural elegance and exceptional quality. And like all precious things, velvet deserves a little extra care. This guide will help you preserve its beauty for years to come.

Understanding the Nature of Velvet
Cotton velvet is a delicate fabric with a soft pile. Because this pile is easily shifted or flattened, velvet is prone to what’s called pressure marking: areas where the pile has been compressed, creating lighter or darker spots depending on the angle of light.
This is a natural characteristic of this fabric and not a flaw or uneven dyeing... it's in fact one of velvet’s unique qualities and that’s part of its charm.
How to Minimize Pressure Marks
While pressure marks can’t be entirely avoided, they can often be softened or lifted with gentle techniques:
• Light steaming: Use a handheld steamer to lightly steam the surface, lifting the pile and reviving its softness.

• Soft brushing: Gently brush the velvet in the direction of the pile using a clothes brush or a clean, soft cloth.

• The damp cloth method: No steamer? No problem. Lay a slightly damp (not wet) cloth over the area overnight, the moisture will help the pile recover by morning.
Important note: Avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing, as this can damage the fibers and cause permanent marks or discoloration.
Tips for keeping your velvet talismans looking their best
• Sunlight: Keep velvet out of direct sunlight to prevent fading over time.
• Water: Velvet does not love water. Avoid spills and moisture, which can damage the fibers.
• Heat: Never iron velvet. The heat can crush and burn the pile.
• Steam, not press: Steam is your velvet’s best friend. It helps the pile stay fresh and plush without harsh contact.
Fresh out of the box? Let the velvet breathe
When your cushion or stool arrives, it may show some creases or flattened areas from being packed. This is completely normal. Give it time to adjust to its new environment. The pile will gradually relax and regain its natural volume and radiance.
